AS 3582.4:2022 pdf – Supplementary cementitious materials Part 4: Pozzolans一Manufactured.
NOTE 3 Grade 2 manufactured pozzolan may be suitable for use in the manufacture of concrete where — testing in concrete has demonstrated no detrimental effects on fresh and hardened properties;
the manufactured pozzolan imparts improvements in properties not achieved without use; and
basic quality control limits are agreed and monitored between the buyer and seller.
NOTE 4 Moisture content greater than the limit above may be acceptable provided testing demonstrates the manufactured pozzolan behaves satisfactorily for the application.
NOTE 5 The relative water requirement test should be undertaken in conjunction with the strength index test. AS 3583.6 does not specifically refer to manufactured pozzolans so the mix proportions for the test procedure used for fly ash would apply.
NOTE 6 The strength index with Type GP cement should not be considered a measure of the compressive strength of concrete containing the manufactured pozzolan. The mass of material specified for the test to determine the strength index with Type GP cement is not considered to be the proportion recommended for the concrete to be used in the work. The optimum amount of manufactured pozzolan for any specific project is determined by the required properties of the concrete and other constituents of the concrete be established by testing. Strength index with Type GP cement is a measure of reactivity with a given cement and is subject to variation depending on the source of the manufactured pozzolan and the cement.
NOTE 7 Soundness or expansion testing as per ASTM C151 or equivalent needs to be undertaken where property value is greater than MgO 5 % prior to use. A cementitious sample containing Type GP cement with at least 20 % manufactured pozzolan (unless a specific project requires a different supplementary ratio) be used.
NOTE 8 Autoclave Expansion Testing (AET) refers to the ability of a hardened cement paste to retain its volume after setting without delayed destructive expansion. This destructive expansion is primarily caused by excessive amounts of magnesia (MgO) in the form of expansive Periclase or free lime (CaO). However, other inherent minerals or chemicals can be found in manufactured pozzolan materials which may inadvertently result in expansion when the material is subjected to AET. Any expansion may not reflect the long-term behaviour of concrete containing manufactured pozzolan. Where a sample tested for AET gives a result> 0.15 %, then the end user should determine whether the material is suitable for the application or purpose. Several studies have shown that AET may provide an unrealistic basis for assessing concrete volume stability, resulting in rejecting the material for use in concrete. See Appendix A Clause A.3.8 for further commentary.
NOTE 9 Where alkali aggregate reaction is a potential deterioration mechanism, the available alkali content be reported. The available alkali should be determined in accordance with AS 3583.12. For further guidance on test procedures and mechanisms on alkali aggregate reaction, refer to HB 79.
5.2 Packaging and delivery of packaged manufactured pozzolans
Manufactured pozzolans packaged in less than 50 kg bags shall be delivered in sound packages,
undamaged by moisture or other defects.
5.3 Marking
Where the unit package size is less than 50 kg, each package shall be legibly marked with the following:
(a) Name and address of the supplier.
(b) ‘Iipe of manufactured pozzolan.
(c) Point of packaging in Australia or New Zealand.
(d) Date of packaging and/or unique identification number.
(e) Total mass of product.
(f) Conformance with this Standard, i.e. AS 3582.4.
NOTE Suppliers making a statement of conformance with this Standard on a product, or on packaging or
promotional material related to that product should ensure that such conformance can be verified.
5.4 Packaging and delivery of bulk manufactured pozzolans
Manufactured pozzolans packaged in bulk shall be transported and handled in a controlled manner to prevent moisture ingress or contamination.
NOTE Bulk transport includes road tankers, portable bulk containers (e.g. ISO containers and bulk bags over 50 kg), ships and rail wagons.
5.5 Marking
Manufactured pozzolans packaged in bulk shall be accompanied with documentation detailing the following:
(a) Name and address of the supplier.
(b) Type of manufactured pozzolan.
(c) Point of dispatch in Australia or New Zealand.
(d) Date of dispatch and/or unique identification number.
(e) Total mass of product.
(f) Conformance with this Standard, i.e. AS 3582.4.
NOTE Suppliers making a statement of conformance with this Standard on a product, or on packaging, documentation or promotional material related to that product should ensure that such conformance can be verified.
